Friday Focus - May 28, 2015

I haven't been in many classrooms this past week, but I have certainly enjoyed many conversations with teachers and students about the incredible progress our students have made in Reading and Math. Whether it was a student excited about their growth and beating their goal or a teacher reflecting on what helped the students to achieve the goal, one thing is clear: we are committed to helping all of our students achieve!  We certainly have a lot to celebrate as we close out another great school year!  Please think of what you are most excited to celebrate about your students' achievement and bring that with you to Monday's staff meeting. :)

Events Next Week:
Monday - Staff Meeting 3:05 (Agenda includes reflection and celebration!)
Tuesday - Grades due by 7:30am
-Registration packets should be sent home with students
Wednesday - I will be out of the building with the 5th grade UW Madison college tour
Thursday - Report Cards to go home (so they don't get lost on the last day fun!)
Friday - The finish line!!!!
10:30 Pride Assembly
11:00-12:00 End of Year Picnic
12:20 early dismissal

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:

  • Please add your Honor Roll/On A Roll names to the google doc so Sarah can get the certificates ready for the Pride Assembly.
  • Our budget for next year is still not finalized, but you may go ahead and start filling our purchase requisitions to turn in before you leave for summer. Please understand that as we watch/monitor the budget there may be some reductions and we will use the priority rankings you used on your budget requests to decide.  Thank you for your understanding with this as the district is waiting for the governor's budget.
  • Please make sure any unfinished items in your mylearningplan are complete:
    • Click "Acknowledge" on any forms that are waiting for you to review.
    • If you do not submit your Alt. Comp form with the evidence of your pre-approved activities by June 15, the form will disappear for you to be able to do so.
    • Self-Score your SLO and hit submit. If you're not on your summative year, we do not have to meet to discuss this unless you want.
    • All the other end of year reminders that were given to you before for the Effectiveness Project are HERE
  • Student porftolio cards for next year's class lists will be put in your mailboxes next week (hopefully by Monday).  You can hold on to these as long as you'd like (but they'll need to come out next May again) or you can give them back to me to keep safe until then.
  • Changes for next year: Don't freak out! If I haven't talked with you, then you're not changing anything! But, if you'd like to know, here's who's moving around:
    • Mrs. Bader will teach 1st grade next year in her current room. :)
    • Mrs. Lisiecki will teach 2nd grade next year in Ms. Peters's current room :)
    • Ms. Peters will move to Mrs. Huelsman's current room.
    • Mrs. Huelsman/Mrs. Patey will move to Mrs. Fobes's room.
    • Mrs. Fobes will be sharing space in Ms. Peters's new classroom.
Survival Messages:
I'm all about enjoying the final days of this school year race and still keeping focus, but let's be real...it can be just a tad stressful (ok, way more than a tad), but sometimes a positive message, deep breaths and just looking at the blue sky for a minute can help. Here's some messages to help...

Friday Focus - May 22, 2015

Events Next Week:
Tuesday - Grade Level PLC Meetings (Bring your deck of cards for the class list card shuffle game)
Wednesday - Staff Appreciation Celebration 3:15
Thursday - 2:20 Bike Safety Assembly

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*As I type this, I'm still not finished with make-up Badger testing in the middle school but will work on a schedule to pull students for make-up MAP testing for next week. Thank you for your patience with this.
*Classroom teachers: Please plan to update the F&P Benchmark google spreadsheet before the end of the year. If you don't remember where to find it: Go to your "shared with me" drive and search for "F&P Benchmark Data." Do NOT stress over a deadline of this...I just need it in there by Monday, June 8th.
*As you're coming into the final stages of grading for the year, please remember (as always) to use a p for pass for students in intervention during any subjects. 4K/5K also have to make sure to enter the end of term grades.  You don't want to worry about Mr. Wallesverd hunting you down the first week of summer! ;)

Friday Focus - May 15, 2015

I want to thank you all for your great discussions on the Jim Knight book on Monday and for all the new strategies you have implemented into your instruction/assessment as a result of this new learning throughout the year. I also want to thank classroom teachers for learning about the new Digital Citizenship "program" to use with our students for next year in our grade level meetings. I even started getting some of the "assignments" sent by email, so thank you! I apologize for not being a part of the grade level meetings to help answer any questions about expectations for this.  Our main goal is that you go into next year having the teacher background knowledge about it so you're reading to kick it off with your students at the start of the year.  You have all summer to read through it at the pace you want (whether that's crammed into one weekend or spread throughout the summer is up to you!). I am not grading your assignments, but just keeping track of if they're done.
If you've got children of your own at home, I'm sure you'll find this to be beneficial to add to your conversations to help them with digital citizenship as well.

Events Next Week:
Monday - concert dress rehearsal for grades 1/3/5 at 8:30 am. Concert is at 6:30pm
-Staff Meeting at 3:05 regarding end of year student iPad transition/procedures
Tuesday - Insurance paperwork meeting 3:00
Friday - Walkathon

And more dates...
Wednesday, May 27 Staff Appreciation Celebration 3:15
Thursday, May 28 2:20 Bike Safety Assembly

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*Just a reminder that I'd love to hear your input on pd/learning wants and needs for next year! Please add your ideas here: http://bit.ly/elempdneeds or check your Google Shared Drive for "Elementary PD/Learning Planning for 2015-2016."  Also let me know if you are passionate about Lucy Calkins and would like to be a part of our PD team for next year on supporting your colleagues in writing.

Friday Focus - May 8, 2015

Great Things I Noticed This Week:

  • Our wheelchair bound 4th grader couldn't go on the field trip to the farm this week, but she was facetimed in and didn't miss the experience!
  • Students "buddy buzzing" to share with a partner the most interesting thing they learned.
  • Students playing "Scoot" to practice solving different types of problems before their unit math test: there was a card at each desk with a different problem. Students rotated or "scooted"around to each desk 6 different times to solve each problem for review, but also getting to move at the same time. What a great way to practice or review different concepts (maybe math facts, vocab, social studies facts, etc.) in a fun way while getting movement!

Events Next Week:
Monday - Elementary Staff Meeting (bring High Impact Instruction)
Tuesday - Grade Level PLC Meetings
FFA Petting Zoo (sign up for times is in the mail room)
3:15 Meeting for new health insurance
Thursday - I'll be on my personal day to join the 4K field trip as mom ;)

Dates for down the road...
Monday, May 18th - concert dress rehearsal for grades 1/3/5 at 8:30 am. Concert is at 6:30pm
-Staff Meeting at 3:05 regarding end of year student iPad transition/procedures
Friday, May 22 - Walkathon
Wednesday, May 27 Staff Appreciation Celebration 3:15
Thursday, May 28 2:20 Bike Safety Assembly

*Just a reminder that if you ever forget or misplace the date, just go back to www.johnsonmemo.blogspot.com and the calendar is on the right side of the website for you.

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
  • Please bring iPads to the Grade Level PLC meetings. Ms. Abegglen will be joining each grade level to talk about Digital Citizenship curriculum for our students for next year, that will include some ongoing learning for you over the summer before the next school year (don't worry...it's fun homework!).  This should not take the entire time, so please bring any other curriculum/lesson planning that your team needs to do.
  • This is a busy time for Mrs. Jaeckel--summer school registration, open enrollment, lots of tedious paperwork. Please keep this in mind as you ask for help with busy work; she will likely not be able to get it done "speedy Gonzeles" style (she'll need a couple days notice likely).
